IN THE FOLDS OF TIME: BETWEEN MEMORY AND MOMENT

November 11 - December 20 , 2025

Time is not always a straight line. It can be stretched, twisted, suspended, embodied, or even refused, much like the act of drawing a form onto a canvas. It is a dimension that coexists passively with space, giving us not a fixed reality but an illusion of temporality within art. In the landscape of Indian modernism, artists have personified this dimension, sometimes subtly, sometimes overtly, in various forms to create images that blur the linear progression of time.
This show brings together seminal works by modernists that draw on temporality that can be felt in form, memory, and everyday life. Images of rest, conversations, and in-between gestures gently resist the urge to fix time, rather, it is held and slowed down, inviting the viewer into a moment of stillness.
For some artists, time takes on a durational quality and is not always marked by an event or an action, instead it sits in the quietude of things. While for some, existing in the folds of time, is shown through embodiment and daily ritual; in fleeting intimate moments that are often overlooked, where time is felt in motions, in repetitions, and in care. In contrast, some dwell in ambiguity, where figures are rendered in sensitive states, colours and moods. They resist the dichotomy of beginnings and endings, embracing instead the richness of the in-between and the quiet tide of emotions that shape our rhythms of time in life.
