IN PERFECT FORM: MASTERY IN MONOCHROME AND BEYOND

September 11 - October 15 , 2025

In the expansive landscape of Indian modernism, bold experimentation with colour and form propelled entire artistic movements. Yet, nestled within this dynamic era is a quieter, more introspective approach, monochrome. Frequently observed as the absence of colour, monochrome reveals itself as something far more profound, a distilled revelation, stripping away distractions to unveil the very essence of artistic intention and mastery.
The show brings together a series of seminal monochromatic works by some of India’s most pioneering modernists, celebrated for their distinctive and vibrant artistry. This pared down palette serves to magnify the precision of structure, composition, and emotional resonance that has always informed their practice. An uninhibited look into the pinnacle of their skill – of their perfect form.
For these artists, monochrome is not a retreat, but an evolution, a bold extension that invites clarity, complexity and contemplation. Untethered by colour, the shift amplifies the distinct nuances of their practices, concurrently offering a striking view into the expanse encompassed within this spectrum of muted tonalities.
The turn toward monochrome, in their hands, is a gesture of confidence, earned through years of practice and deep introspection. It signals not austerity, but authenticity and restraint honed through time. The simplicity becomes a mirror, reflecting an inner candour, a rawness that emerges only when everything else is stripped away making way into the artist’s truest voice, unmediated and raw. This exhibition is a testimony to that mastery. It is a space where colour is not absent but has transformed into a language of its own.

The exhibition includes works by Amrita Sher-Gil, Anandmohan Naik, Anil Karanjai, Badri Narayan, Bhupen Khakhar, Chandana Hore, Gulammohammed Sheikh, Manjit Bawa, Nasreen Mohamedi, Somnath Hore, Vivan Sundaram, Zarina Hashmi.
